Free as in Freedom: Live at SeaGL!
And they’re back! Join Karen and Bradley as they record a live episode of Free as in Freedom (their podcast about legal, policy, and many other issues in the free and open source software world), for the first time with a live studio audience. The recording will begin with a brief chat about the conference and then move to topic suggestions and questions from you, the audience. Stop by the Conservancy booth during the conference to submit your questions in advance. Bradley and Karen will be ready to talk about copyleft enforcement, diversity initiatives in free software, timely news stories and anything else you think they should discuss.

Karen M. Sandler, Software Freedom Conservancy
Karen M. Sandler is the executive director of the Software Freedom Conservancy, which is the nonprofit home of dozens of free and open source software projects including Git, Etherpad, QEMU, Selenium and Inkscape (to name a few). She is known as a cyborg lawyer for her advocacy for free software as a life-or-death issue, particularly in relation to the software on medical devices.
Prior to joining Conservancy, she was the executive director of the GNOME Foundation. Karen co-organizes Outreachy, the award-winning outreach program for people who are subject to systemic bias and underrepresented in tech. Karen is an adjunct Lecturer-In-Law at Columbia Law School and Visiting Scholar at UC Santa Cruz as an advisory committee member of the Center for Research in Open Source Software. She is the recipient of the Free Software Foundation’s 2017 Award for the Advancement of Free Software as well as an O’Reilly Open Source Award.
Bradley M. Kuhn, Software Freedom Conservancy
Bradley M. Kuhn is the Policy Fellow and Hacker-in-Residence at Software Freedom Conservancy and editor-in-chief of copyleft.org. Kuhn began his work in the software freedom movement as a volunteer in 1992, as an early adopter of Linux-based systems and contributor to various Free Software projects, including Perl. He worked during the 1990s as a system administrator and software developer for various companies, and taught AP Computer Science. Kuhn’s non-profit career began in 2000 at the Free Software Foundation (FSF). As FSF’s Executive Director from 2001–2005, Kuhn led GPL enforcement, launched its Associate Member program, and invented the Affero GPL. Kuhn began as Conservancy’s primary volunteer from 2006–2010, and became its first staffer in 2011. Kuhn holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Loyola University in Maryland, and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Cincinnati. Kuhn has a blog and co-hosts the audcast, Free as in Freedom.
